To Compote or Not to Compote....that is the Question

I was at the local thrift store today picking up what else...more milk glass (lol). To the lady behind the counter I stated that I would be willing to take the 2 compote dishes that were safely protected within a glass display case. She said the what?? The compote dishes to which I verbally guided her towards my choice. Then she asked me what is a compote?

According to dictionary.com the definition of a compote is this:

1.fruit stewed or cooked in a syrup, usually served as a dessert.
2.Also, compotier. a dish, usually of glass, china, or silver, having a base, stem, and often a lid, and used for serving fruit, nuts, candy, etc.

even though I have seen many other uses for this very quaint lovely dish. My mind was swelling with all the decorating possibilities these dishes will have come holiday season!

Therefore in the spirit of a compote and to assist all those who truly do not understand what a compote is; here is a recipe. I hope it helps!

FRESH FRUIT PUDDING COMPOTE

1 3/4 c. milk
3 oz. pkg. vanilla instant pudding mix
1 1/2 c. fresh blueberries
1 1/2 c. sliced bananas
1 tbsp. orange juice
1 c. whipped topping
1 1/2 c. sliced fresh strawberries
1 1/2 c. sliced peaches
Combine milk, orange juice, and instant pudding mix in bowl; beat at low speed of an electric mixer 1 minute. Add 1 cup whipped topping and beat an additional minute. Combine fruit; arrange half of fruit mixture in individual serving compotes; top with pudding mixture. Top with remaining fruit. Garnish with additional whipped topping, if desired.

There's Usually A Piece Of Milk Glass Everywhere I Go................

Well to say the least I tend to do a lot of travelling around these days in search for this mesmerizing white glass.  And I can admit that about 75% of the time I have been successful in finding a piece here or there.  Usually at thrift shops and at garage sales.  I've found some wonderful trays recently at a garage sale in the country that is just the right size for holding something wonderful at the next big family get together.  And for the most part it has not been priced too high.  Some of the pieces are small and perhaps people just want to get rid of it or just do not comprehend its potential worth.  Once in awhile you come across someone who just loves to talk and tell either stories about the milk glass or listen to me and my stories about collecting this wonderful glass.  I find that the more I go out there the bigger or greater the treasure.  It's also a great way for me to find duplicates or triplicates of some of the pieces that I already have.  Perhaps one day soon I'll be able to start selling or trading with other fanatics like me.  Sorry to say that this Fenton piece in this particular photograph is not in my collection yet; just a photograph courtesy of Google Images.  But one day it just might become a great piece to display in my home.

I Came This Close To Getting A Cake Plate But..............................

See this cake plate here......I believe it is one of the most sought after pieces for the milk glass collectors. Keep in mind that all I have been doing lately is going to garage sales and thrift shops on a fairly regular basis and continue to build up a mighty fine collection which now includes Avon glass. So on my usual weekly journey I thought I had hit the jackpot. Yes a cake plate that was exactly like this one! I could see it from afar. Just to cool my jets a little I wandered throughout the thrift store checking out what other milk glass pieces were in existence so that I could bring it home as well. No luck. Just this plate. So finally I made my way up to it. The price sticker was stuck to the side and it said $3.99. I couldn't believe my eyes. I got sooo excited. I couldn't wait to touch it. I wanted this piece sooo bad. I wanted it in my home. I wanted to bake a dozen cakes just to put it to good use and show off its true beauty. But sadly this just was not meant to be at this time in my life. I picked it up and looked at it. Across the top of it was a browny yellowed line that clearly indicated the crack that was there. The glue that managed to still keep it in one place. The glue that broke my heart and made me sad. But my hopes are not all dashed for these precious pieces of milk glass do exist and I'm bound and determined to have one soon!

Never Underestimate The Power Of A Husband .... Or Question Him !!

Well to put it in a nice way I've really gone a little bit crazy over the past couple of weeks adding milk glass pieces to my growing collection. And most of the time my better half aka husband has been with me. But there were a few times when he was not! And I suppose in some odd way I just didn't want to shock him as to how much milk glass was entering the house! So I've been hiding it here and there bring pieces out casually. Well tonight he did some vacuuming and he came across some of it. Well he didn't flip out as I thought he would. He just asked "where are you going to put all this stuff?" to which I replied that I will find homes for it all. He didn't come across all of my hiding spots yet!! Tomorrow is another day to hit the thrift shops once again to see if any new pieces hit the shelves over the weekend! And I truly thank my better half for his patients and understanding when it comes to this latest hobby in my life!
